European response to Google vs the US response to Skype

I am in a panel debate about the differences between Unites States and Europe when it comes to innovation and web businesses. A bit like the annual discussion at Oxford University.

Some of the Europeans in the panel talked about the initiative to build a European search engine as a response to Google's dominance.

Mike Arrington, one of the Americans on the panel, responded:

"You are talking about the French response to Google. We didn't have a response to Skype, we just embraced it. And then we bought it."
